Broken Head Project — Construction & Architectural Photography Byron Bay
This project in Broken Head, NSW was designed by Fraser Mudge Architects and built by Wellgrounded Build. The renovation is defined by its materials — handmade brick, corrugated iron, hardwood timber, and stone — executed with a level of craft that reads clearly in both the construction and the finished space.
Fraser Mudge's design works with the site rather than against it. The building sits low in the landscape, with deep overhangs, timber screens, and split-level interiors that manage light and ventilation without mechanical systems. The brick walls were kept from the original build; it's the primary material inside and out, and the quality of the work is central to the character of the space.
Wellgrounded Build brought that design to life with the kind of attention to detail that makes architectural photography worthwhile. The joinery, the decking, the stone steps, everything was done properly, and it shows.
I photographed the project across two sessions: one in the afternoon to capture the exterior in natural light, and one at dusk when the warm tones of the timber and brick were at their best against the evening sky.
