Swell Byron Bay — Hotel Photography

Swell is one of Byron Bay's most enduring boutique hotels, a property that has shaped the town's reputation for a certain kind of relaxed, design-conscious hospitality. Set back from the beach with a distinctive aesthetic that balances warmth and restraint, Swell has long been a benchmark for what boutique accommodation in the Northern Rivers can be.

The interiors by Nyree MacKenzie are layered and considered, a mix of natural materials, curated furniture, and a colour palette that draws directly from the surrounding landscape. Photographing Swell required an understanding of that language: the way light moves through the spaces at different times of day, how the outdoor areas connect to the interior, and the quiet details that give each room its character.

This ongoing collaboration has produced some of my most versatile hospitality work, imagery that functions equally well across social media, website hero shots, and editorial contexts. It's the kind of photography that needs to communicate the feeling of being a guest, not just the look of a room.

Working with Swell has reinforced something I return to on every hospitality shoot: the best hotel photography isn't about making a space look perfect. It's about making the viewer want to be there.
