Basq House Byron Bay — Interior Photography
Basq House is one of Byron Bay's more considered new additions, a luxury accommodation property where the interior design does the work quietly and with confidence. The brief was clearly about restraint: warm materials, soft curves, carefully chosen pieces that give each space a strong sense of identity without announcing itself.
The interiors were designed by Studio Terrando, whose approach favours layered, tactile environments over the kind of surface-level styling that photographs easily but feels hollow in person. These are spaces that reward time; the more you look, the more you notice. That quality presented both a challenge and an opportunity for photography: the work was to reveal what makes each space compelling without over-explaining it.
I shot Basq House across the whole day, working through the spaces as the natural light shifted.. The living areas face west and are at their best in the early afternoon, when the light is soft. The outdoor areas have a different quality in the late afternoon — warmer, more textured, better suited to the earthy palette of the landscaping.
The resulting photography has become some of my favourites, evidence that when design is considered, the images find voice.
